Decisions to be made regarding Ever So Lucky’s future, meanwhile Hutcheson Stakes in on the cards for the colt
The speedy 3-year-old colt, Ever So Lucky, and his connections are keeping everyone guessing, whether the colt is Kentucky Derby material or not, and a decision in his favour should be made to put him on the Kentucky Derby trail.
Things should be put into perspective rather waiting for them to fall into, but key decision making time is upon trainer Jonathan Sheppard, who is also looking for answers for all these questions, and what better way to find out then sending the rampant
colt on the track and let him do all the talking.
Augustin Stable’s newly turned 3-year-old colt, Ever So Lucky, is yet to make his 2012 and sophomore debut, but his connections will clear the air by sending him to run in the Grade 2, $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes which has reeled in a short field of six, held
at Gulfstream Park’s dirt course on 11 February, 2012, at about seven furlongs.
However, Sheppard thinks that he should give his colt some extra time to make his 2012 debut, and he said on 8 February, 2012, he might scratch, Ever So Lucky, from the Hutcheson Stakes and consider him for the Grade 2 Swale Stakes on 10 March at seven furlongs.
Sheppard’s thought process behind giving the colt extra time could’ve been inspired by, Ever So Lucky’s slow work on 6 February ahead of the race, when he clocked five furlongs in 1 minute and 1 3/5 seconds.
“It was too slow. I think the horse needed one more good work,” Sheppard said. “I mean, it was better than nothing, but it didn’t prove much.
“The horse wasn’t even blowing after the work. When he worked the previous time, he worked in company. Julien (Leparoux) had to ride him a little bit to catch up. The horse got something out of it, and I wanted something similar. This time for some reason
I decided to work him alone.”
The son of Indian Charlie, out of Summer Squall mare Bally Storm, broke his maiden at six and a half furlongs at first asking at Churchill Downs, and at the same venue he finished second to, Gemologist in the 1 1/16 mile long Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club.
