Question:

Deck problems?

i have an octagon shaped deck that is under a 50-60 foot tree and we can't use the deck because of all the bird droppings, and stuff falling from the tree. The tree can not be cut down due to where it is located. I was wanting to put some type of a permanant roof over it, we had a local contractor look at and they said they would have to take my deck apart, everything but the floor and it was going to cost an arm and a leg. Any suggestions would be great!!!!! Thanks

  1. find some type of netting to catch the bird droppings, etc.; large sq. footage netting can be ordered online and attach it to the lower limbs; it can be removable for cleaning

  2. Without a picture of the deck as is it is hard to make any great suggestions.  It sounds like the contractor was unable to use the current supports for the deck to support a roof around the deck.  I would look into placing the support posts for the cover outside of the current footprint of the deck and have the cover free standing independent of the deck.  Contractors are naturally going to find your most expensive solution hoping that you will say yes and then they make all the money they would like.  You can save a great deal by doing it yourself and also by purchasing the supplies so that you don't pay a mark up on those.  You are probably also creating extra costs due to the shape of the deck.  If you can live with more of a square or rectangle designed cover it should decrease your costs.  I would look into doing a partial fabric (canvas or tight nit netting) for a cheaper option on part of the roof.  You also have different options in the type of roof that you go with.  Your design plan and material choices are where you can look to cut your costs.  Good luck!  Ohh and put up some bird deflectors, they sell electronic ones for hotels and public places that have this problem, won't be a total fix but will help with the bird mess.

  3. Nevermind, Lee W took my answer! Good luck

  4. The solution to this is easy. Find another contractor.

Inform the contractor that all you want is an octagon roof, on 4 X 4's over your existing deck. Easy to design, easy to build, and looks good, too.

  5. A good tent and awning shop should be able to make you a temporary canopy which could be thrown up on a metal frame and taken down easily.  this might be a bit cheaper.
