i am using a dark bay mare with a stripe and sock in a fourth of july parade and we can only use red, white blue and gold things. I want to be creative and make her look good but i can't come up with anything unique! so far i've brainstormed...

-red/white saddle pad

-i'm wearing a blue tank top

-red, white blue bow in her tail then braid it with red ribbon

-red ribbon in her mane

- beaded clips for her mane

-two flags wrapped on her legs in the place of polos

-blue hoof glitter

-stars stenciled on her hind quarters with gold/blue glitter

any other ideas!?!?

  1. Assuming you ride Western:

I couldn't find anything for English.

  2. u should use christmas tinsle red and silver

  3. Keep in mind that Less is More.  If you go with too much she will just look gaudy.  Get some really narrow ribbons and hang though her mane in patriotic colors and do the same with her tail.  I don't know about the flags on her legs.  You can get patriotic motif leg wraps or boots that would look better.

  4. Don't use flags for wraps.  Some very patriotic people will absolutely flip if you do that.  They would consider you to be dishonoring the flag.  There are polos and boots you can get with flag patterns on them.  Or just use red, white, or blue...or a mixture of them.

I don't think washable markers would show up but you can used washable paint on horses.  We've done it a million times.  Just make sure you wash it off with soap (not just water) when you are done.

  5. Something I've done before....

Made 2 'flags' on sticky foam sheets...you can get them at any craft store.  Draw your flags on the sheet...highlight with glitter and then peel the back and stick to your horse's rump on each side.

I use colored vet wrap for 'polos'.  They come in many colors...I wrap with red, then white in the middle, then blue on the bottom.

I make a 'blob' of curly ribbon [Christmas kind] and tie that to the top of the tail...then hang streamers of red, white, and blue down the tail.

I will make a small braid at the top of the mane near the poll.  Again adding a bow and streamers of Christmas ribbon in red, white, and blue.

Also used a large flat piece of yellow ribbon and the horse wore it around it's neck...like rhythm bead style...except it had two tails...like the 'support our troops' ribbons look like.

Sprinkle red, clear/white, and blue glitter across the rump and you can hold in in place temporarily with hair spray.  Can also glitter down the mane and hold with hairspray.  I don't do the forelock...don't want glitter in my horse's ears or eyes...even accidentally.

If ya wanna go gaudy...and I've done that too...Paint color everything on your horse...decorate your saddle and yourself as much as possible, paint the hooves, change the color of the horse...whatever you feel like.  BUT make sure it can be removed easily from your horse and tack when you are done!

    Have fun!!

*****EDIT...YES...you can use hair spray.   I do it, our high school equestrian team does it...I'm a coach for them, all other high school equestrians do it at the competitions, people in parades do it that I ride with.  We just use the generic dollar store kind.  As long as you don't touch the glitter...it will hold.  And brushes right off, unless you WANT to bathe the horse...it won't hurt them.

You can also use kiddie washable poster paint on your horse.  Won't stain and comes right off.  Even the blue and red colors.  We also use that ALL the time.

  6. instead of the flags.. just use a red polo and a blue polo...

all you have is good.. if you ride western.. do what we do.

have a bag with candy, and hang it on the saddle horn and throw it to kids

    have fun!

    you're gonna look sweet
