Decorating my drumsticks?

I want to decorate my drumsticks because I have no life and am very bored. How can I decorate without s******g up because of the curvey-ness? I want to make a checkerboard kind of thing with paint or sharpie idk yet but I just need to know how to not s***w up and thanks!

  1. Yes, use masking tape for neat lines.

    If using a permanent marker, the lines might bleed along the length of the wood (with the grain).  

    If you're ambitous, you can avoid this by lightly scoring along the edge of the masking tape with an exacto or razor knife, just enough to put a line in the top wood grains on the surface.  On a hard flat surface, try pressing the knife into the wood and carefully rolling the sticks to create a line around the stick.  If the sticks have a clear varnish coat, this might not be a problem, but if they are bare wood, the permanent marker will certainly bleed, leaving ugly edges.


  2. tape off each drumstick with blue painters tape in the pattern you'd like to paint each stick.  In those areas, lightly sand each stick so that the new paint will stick.  Take a paint pen and paint the areas on the stick the different colors.  When dry, remove the tape.

  3. Use masking tape to get sharp, straight lines.
