Decorating my kitchen...ugly counter top, HELP?!?

I live in a studio apartment. The main room is decorated in aqua blue and purple with sort of a tropics theme. The bathroom has a sea green tiled shower so I did it in sea green and aqua...simple...right? Well, the kitchen has this BRIGHT YELLOW mustard colored countertop. I think I could work it into the color sceme somehow. I can't change the counter because I am renting and it would be expensive. I don't mind painting a wall if I have to. I just want to know, how do I make my kitchen harmonize with the mismatched counter and the rest of the house? It there anything that might make the yellow either 1) blend in better or 2) become a striking accent color I could use elsewhere in the kintchen. Keep in mind it's a really small space so I kind of want to stick to the blue-green range. I am also fine with bright colors and I would not mind something unusual or bold looking, as long as it looks nice.

  1. I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but I also had that ugly color countertop in one of my apartments and I toned it down by painting the walls with a dark beige, sorta of a buff like color and my curtains had earth colors, rather than going bright, like you usually would a kitchen,.

  2. I would go with the tropical theme in the kitchen...pineapples are associated with hospitality and good luck.  The colors in a pineapple could be inspiration...dark green, tan, dark brown, pale yellow. maybe a seagrass rug underfoot. pull in some pineapple/ tropical-ish accessories: prints, towels, ceramics.  It would bring in the tropical theme from the rest of the apt, giving the whole space flow. I would throw in a touch of purple and aqua as accents just to bring it all together.
