What decorations and colours do you recommend? I bought purple and yellow napkins, but I think that's too daytime-ish.

I think I will switch it to red, silver, and black.

I'm also thinking white christmas lights.

Any ideas?

  1. um also wat would be nice the food and music u have music is important fun and hip an for appetizers fruit with chocolate maybe even adult beverages being served mmm yummy sounds fun an to top it off at the end make or buy something intresting so when your guess go home they have something like candy of photos of the event to remember it by.... FUN FUN FUN....

  2. The yellow is what makes it look more day time-ish.  Why not still use the purple (since you have already bought it) and add blue or green - or my favourite - black!  That could look nice.  Then you could have some great purple cocktails like this...

  3. If it's a celebratory cocktail party then the lights are a nice idea. If your guests are in the Under 30 crowd, then the lights are ok.  But if you want a more sophisticated look then go with the basics.

If you are going with a buffet table of light food and drinks... if it's after 6 then nice floating candles in a clear bowl along with flower blooms is simple and elegant. depending on how large your table is you could place the 'candle boats"  no more than 2 , around the trays.

A table that can be put at an angle to block a corner is best. You can use different levels on your table to give it that special elegant look, then put a solid color tablecloth over it.

My husband called me at the last minute to tell me that 3 couples were coming from his office before we went to dinner.  We had a wonderful market near home so I called them and they put together a couple of trays for me, finger sandwiches, fruit, cheese, veggies (gotta love those guys) .  This was very informal, but it was also mu husband's associates and his boss.  It was summer so a nice evening look was out of the question,  so I went for comfortable chic.  I moved our round table to the corner, where the ficus would frame the back of the table.  I didn't have anything else to use for "lifts" so I grabbed my son and commandeered his assistance, he brought out some of my old encyclopedias I covered them with plastic grocery bags to be safe, 2 in one place, 3 in another, 1 in another ( the 3 was in the back)  I have a really pretty bowl that is about 4 inches deep and about 12" in diameter.  I floated 4 white candles and 6 gardenia blossoms (from my back yard) with the small amount of heat from the candles the smell was great) I covered the table with a yellow table cloth and used Cornflower Blue plates (a gift that matched nothing in my kitchen... lol)  put the finger foods on the plates with my sons help. Opened a bottle of red wine, and made sure the wite was in the freezer for a fast chill.

My husband's boss's wife asked me when I had stopped working and decided to stay at home... LOL  I told her I hadn't.. I still worked full time.  I got home at 5:30 they were all at my house at 7..... TADA.....  but we have a great son, too.  He did whatever I needed done. including pressing the dress I was wearing that night.  lol  He was 15 at the time.

The more comfortable your cocktail party is the more successful it will be.  Nice low music in the background so people can converse.... Yanni is nice.

If you're trying to impress a superior, don't let them think they are paying you too much... lol.  But let them know that you are organized.

Any party store has the candles and they are great.

  4. You're absolutely right purple & yellow won't work...

    Silver, red & black are nice;

However, I was thinking on the lines of royal blue, black w/ the white lights & a hint of silver. You can put place laterns on the table.

  5. white and orange

  6. i like red black and silver with lights

    niiiice

  7. I think that chocolate brown and turquoise looks the best for a cocktail party

  8. Purple and yellow can definitely be evening colors ... If you bought light purple, just introduce some DEEP purple too....  Then you can get some yellow & purple glowsticks at the Dollar Tree, and even some glow necklaces (to put around some of the serving dishes) .....  Red, silver & black seem to be wintery colors, to me......
