Decorators, where did you find materials for your samples and portfolio?

I'm just starting on my interior decorating endevours and just need a little push and some good ideas on where and what kind of samples (floor, carpet, wall, etc) I should start collecting. I heard I can go to certain stores and ask for samples- do you get charged or do they ever give you "freebies"? Let me know how you started out :D

Some fabric companies offer free samples so you can just call them and ask them to send you some
