Question:

Dedicated to the two religions Bachar Houli?

Essendon player Bachar Houli has a personal story written in a Northern suburbs newspaper about his life playing football and practicing Islam. In particular, fasting and not hydrating himself during gruelling training sessions, in the month of Ramadan.

Any thoughts on something that is not new, but amazing to hear.

  1. That is Amazing!!!!

I used to live next door to Muslims that fast during Ramadan, and they amazed me how they coped,so imagine being an elite athlete and doing that....I think it all comes down to the mind. They are used to it I suppose.

But boy as soon as that sun sets...watch out. They have an amazing feast.

  2. Personally I don't agree with the religion or what its about, but thats just a personal opinion, and I fully respect him and the decisions he makes.

It must be tough, but full credit to him, and I hope he is treated no better and no worse than any other AFL player because of it.  Dedication to the max....

  3. I have friends who are muslim and I see first hand how difficult it is to fast during ramadan so Bachar Houli fasting during training is exceptional!

I believe Essendon allow him to train early in the morning and later at night so hes not so affected by lack of food/liquids.

Great to see that footy embrasses all religions :))

  4. absolute dedication and perceverience

the guy is awesome for doing so and u can only hope he gets his big break with the bombers

  5. he is a good talent and is going to be a great player for the Eseendon Football Club

  6. its perverse

  7. I think its great we have players in the code from other cultures, our Irish recruits have been sensational, Stynes Wight Kennelly and most recently O'hAirpin and Marty Clarke.  The bottom line is though " Aussie Rules" is the game, (even though they can be bloody hard to follow sometimes)  That should always remain the DISCIPLINE! no if butts, maybe's or whatever. If ya can't conform to perform ya goin against the NORM .      I'd be horrified if team rules, regulations or discipline was compromised or altered in way at my club, just to accomodate an 'individual', its a team game.       I perish the thought that Multiculturalism, could one day 'ruin' our game, and while we have heritage round and rivalry round I am so thankful, our Greek Leader Mr Demetriou has not as yet , introduced a Souvlaki round .

  8. I also read that article, and apparently research is being done on how soccer and other codes work around these situations.

Don't know how Bachar would go playing up north if the weather is very hot.

The  Essendon club would possibly rotate him off the bench.
