The 21-year-old, who came through the ranks of the English champions’ youth academy, had seen limited first-team opportunities at Etihad Stadium since making his professional career debut in the 2008/09 season.
The promising youngster failed to represent the Citizens regularly since making his debut, only making 10 appearances for the English top tier outfit, and was sent on a season-long loan deal to Bolton Wanderers in the 2011/12 campaign to gain first-team
experience.
Boyata stressed that he always wanted to fight for his place in the City playing XI after returning to Etihad Stadium. However, he also admitted that his chances were far and few between to have enjoyed many first-team opportunities.
“I definitely want to fight for my place and I’m not someone who runs away. But sometimes you stop dreaming, become realistic and leave”, the 21-year-old was quoted as saying to De Telegraaf.
The Belgian stopper went on to insist that he wanted City to sell him to the Enschede giants rather than sending him on another loan spell.
“Ideally, I wanted to be sold to Twente this summer and make a new, fresh start – but City did not let me go. Apparently, the club still believe in me”, Boyata added.
