Question:

Deep Sea Fishing Tips?

I went deep sea fishing last year and had a lot of fun. But I want to learn from my previous mistakes. I noticed that the rented rod that I had got was only able to catch very small or medium sized fish. I saw that the captain of the ship caught very large fish because he had a much larger hook and a large fake bait on the end of that hook. So could I just buy a larger hook similar to the one that he had as well as the fake large bait in order to catch larger fish? Because I figure that the larger hook and bait would only catch larger fish because the smaller fish would not be able to bite the hook or swallow the fake bait. Any advice on this issue would greatly be appreciated! thanks

  1. first of the size of the rod doesnt matter it is still possible to catch large fish on a small rod. and you could also try using live bait on a big hook you will find that you catch large fish with the live bait

  2. ya i think ur right  plus the bigger the bait bigger fish wont have to be so nervous and actually come into to give it a nibble because they will already know what it is

  3. The captain was probably using a casting reel and working a lure. You were probably bottom fishing with a drum reel. Different fish, different bait, different techniques. Unless you know how to fish, stick with the rented rod and be happy with what you got. If you had forty people on the boat, all casting lures, half of them would be stuck in the fishermen. Know your limitations, and have fun.

I have been fishing in the ocean my whole life, and I'm not one tenth as skilled a fisherman as some of my buddies.

  4. another tip. Talk to the mates on the boat. tip them and pick their brains. They know what works and what will cause problems. If they are not helpful go fishing elsewhere.
