SORRY, what is the method used by fishermen in South East Asia for deep-sea fishing

  2. hand lines usually....  all wrapped around on a can or a stick is what many who move here use on the pier until they go buy rods and reels.

In south east asia there is a growing trend to fish a method that is being called "extreme fishing" by some.  It is actually two styles of fishing using similar tackle.  They are known as vertical jigging, the shimano "butterfly" method is based on it, and popping, for tuna, mahi mahi, trevally and any number of pelegic species.  The styles were pioneered in japan, and have spread through the indo-pacific basin like wild fire.  It is just now beginning to be used with any regularity here in the U.S..  Trolling is also used along with traditional bottom fishing with cut or live bait, but to read the literature, all those methods are taking second seat to vertical jigging and popping.
