im used to playing in regular tourneys where you start with 1500 chips and blinds in crease every 10-15 mins and I usually make the money. I want to try this dep stack where we start with 5000 in chips and blinds go up every 30min does this mean I should kick back more then normal and wait for premium hands more then normal since I have more time for the blinds going up? Or should I stick to the same strategy as the regular tourneys?

  1. Your strategy will need to change in a couple small ways.

    - Weaker players tend to see bets relative to their chip stack, not the blinds or pot size.  Therefore, they may make larger bets than normal.  Don't get pulled into the trap of playing your hands for more chips than they're worth, but also don't get scared off a strong hand by an oversized bet from a weak player.

    - The slower blinds mean there's less pressure to build your stack ahead of the blinds.  You can play your normal style pre-flop, if that's where your comfort zone is, but back away from risky calls and coin flips more.  You have more time to outplay your opposition.

    - If a player loses 3500 chips early, they still have a very good stack, relative to the blinds.  Don't forget to check players based on their M (yourself included) and not just on their tourney position.

  2. I prefer a tournament with a structure like that.  You can play straight forward poker early on.  I tend to be tighter however, I will limp, if possible in late possition with drawing hands and take a free flop.  I also don't raise with small pps I like to limp with them too and hope to hit the flop.  Play real tight up front, and loosen up in the back of the rotation.  I don't like to play many big pots early in the tournament, unless I know I am ahead.  As the blinds get on up there be a little more aggressive, especially as the bubble is getting close, pick on the short stacks prior to the bubble busting you will collect alot of blinds and antes at that time.  Once the bubble busts, I tighten up, folks get a whole lot looser once they have gotten their buyin back.  That is just a general outline, however, the players at the table determine how I play at all times, if they are tight, I am looser, if they are passive, I am aggressive, if they are aggressive, I become more passive, if they are loose, you guessed it, I tighten up.  Swim up stream always, and, the most important thing in deep stack tournament play, shift gears whenever you need to you have to do that.  Good luck.

  3. First off if you are confident in your game do not change it for anything.

I try not to let the size of my stack or the size of a buy in dictate the way I play. Sometimes its hard to take the freerolls and the cheap tournys seriously, and then lose early. But if you play them legit you can usually make it far. And the same with the size of my stack. I'm not going to raise with an Ace 10 or lower off suit or call certain raises with A 10 or lower off suit just because I have a nice stack. I would play the same as you normally do through out. Which probably is playing conservatively all the while mixing it up a little bit.

I would use this oportunity to see cheap flops early with certain good cards (mid suited conector types) with good position. And use post flop play to your advantage and know where you stand and put your money in at the right time with the best hand.

And once blinds start going up then kick back and play a little tighter. If you have a good game you should do all right.

They usually have these tournys at the higher $$ levels. So look for your cheapest ones to start out and see if you like them and what works well for you. Experimental games are always best at low levels. Why jump into a $20 stud hi/low if your noy used to that game? Unless you won entry through satelite, then Congrats!

    Good Luck.

  4. For the most part you're going to play about the same but perhaps slow down a little.  Also expect the bet s****. slightly bigger early in the hand.  The larger stacks also give you a chance to play a few more drawing hands as well.

  5. as long as you use M theory and pot odds, your strategy should be the same. some players, not all, will make larger sized bets. this usually means that they are doubling their opening bets (instead of 4X, 8X, etc.) But again, if you stick to M theory and pot odds, you should be fine.
