Deer Lakes defeats Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 3-0 : Volleyball news
The Deer Lakes boys volleyball team has done what was expected of them by securing a position in the final of the WPIAL Class AA boys volleyball tournament. The semi-final match that enabled Deer Lakes to edge closer to the champion’s title was played against
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, which they won 3-0.
Deer Lakes made a clean sweep over their opponents and this should go a long way in boasting their confidence in the final match. The first set was won quite comfortably by Deer Lakes as the Chargers failed to match the performance of their rivals. It was
only in the second and the third sets that the Chargers showed some signs of life by fighting back. However, the effort was not enough to save them and the Chargers could not stop Deer Lakes from posting a win with a final score of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-23.
The player that escorted Deer Lakes towards their success was undoubtedly Jeremy Gaston. Gaston, who is a senior on the Deer Lakes team, kept the score board ticking by posting a total of 10 kills for his team. To his credit, Gaston also added three blocks
for his squad.
In appreciation of his player, the Deer Lakes Coach Rick Tatrn said, "Gaston is our senior leader, and that's what he needs to do. They came to play and I'm not sure we did. We got by with what we got by with."
Despite the fact that Deer Lakes won the semifinal, a Charger was still able to post a higher number of kills than Gaston did for his team. This was Shaughn McDonald, a freshman on the Chargers team, who kept his team moving on by registering a total number
of 15 kills all through the match. McDonald was not the only Charger that played an important part in their struggle against Deer Lakes. Dan Szabate was also able to make his presence felt by posting nine kills in all.
The number one ranked Deer Lakes team is entering the final match with an overall season record to be proud of. However, their competitors for the trophy, the number two ranked Montour team supports performance statistics that is a notch better than that
of the Deer Lakes. Both Deer Lakes as well as Montour have not yet lost a match. However, Deer Lakes have bagged themselves a total of 14 wins in this season so far whereas the Montour have been able to secure 15 wins.
It remains to be seen whether Deer Lakes would be able to equal the record by adding a victory in the final on Friday or Montour will further increase the gap by improving their number of wins to 16.
