Today I took a trip to the Indiana Dunes (on lake Michigan). What I had hoped to be a relaxing day on the beach quickly turned into a nightmare. My girlfriend and I were swarmed by biting flies (either deer flies or horse flies... I think). The flies would not go away, even after a good soaking in 99% DEET insect repellent!!!
There was no way to make these flies go away, we put bugspray all over our towels, clothes etc. Each of us had probably 20 flies on us at any given time. Our only refuge was going into the lake.
Wanting out of our misery, we promptly left the beach and the day was over that quickly.
Has ANYONE ever found a way to control these vermin? I really want to go back to the dunes soon. Any help is greatly appreciated.
