In ipconfig, it shows that my default gateway ip is x*x.xx.xx.2. I used tracert, and the first entry should be the default gateway, but I got x*x.xx.xx.3 (1 off). Then, I tried pathping, and I got x*x.xx.10 (8 off) as my first entry. Can someone tell me what that means? Thanks!

  1. your default gate is x*x.x*x.x*x.2

your router is probably x*x.x*x.x*x.3 (tracert goes from workstation to router to gateway)

with the pathping command. you first must go from your computer x*x.x*x.x*x.10 to your router, then gateway

  2. If this is in a corporate environment with HSRP routers for the default gateway the default gateway is a virtual IP and the response comes from the IP of the active router.  The order of operation for tracert would be first the physical ip (not the virtual ip of the HSRP gateway) of active router. pathping order of operation the first response is the ip of your machine.
