Defeat against Hong Kong has ended our chances to qualify for Uber Cup Finals, says Rexy Mainaky
Malaysia’s coach Rexy Mainaky said that losing against Hong Kong in the Uber Cup Preliminary round has ended the hopes of Malaysian squad to qualify for the Uber Cup Finals, which will be played in China, in May.
Malaysia lost to Hong Kong with a margin of 2-3 on Friday, February 17, in Macau and has virtually failed to make the cut for the Finals.
In the opening Women’s Singles clash, Malaysia’s Tee Jing Yi, currently World Number 53 could not play well against Hong Kong’s Yip Pui Yin, who won the match with a 21-12 and 21-9 score on the board.
In the following contest, Malaysia’s Chin Eei h*i – Wong Pei Tty lived up to the expectations as they defeated Hong Kong’s Tse Ying Suet – Poon Loke Yan with a remarkable margin of 21-16 and 21-18 and levelled the match.
In the second Women’s Singles fight, Malaysia’s Lydia Cheah played well but not enough to win against Hong Kong’s Chan Tsz Ka, who ended the fight with a 22-20, 18-21 and 21-17 score.
Nevertheless, Malaysia’s Lim Yin Loo and Goh Liu Ying played tremendous badminton and won the second Women’s Doubles fight against Chan Hung Yung and Chau Hoi Wah of Hong Kong with a 21-19 and 21-15 score on the board.
In the deciding Women’s Singles battle, Sannatasah Saniru could not contribute to her team as she failed to overpower Hong Kong’s Mong Kwan and lost the match in straight games with a margin of 13-21 and 15-21.
The coach, Rexy said, "Our defeat against Hong Kong has ended our chances of qualifying for the final rounds. If we couldn't beat Hong Kong, it is very difficult against Indonesia and Singapore who are very strong. Our singles players are feeling down after continuous defeats.”
However, he is optimistic for Women’s Doubles to put up good show in their today’s match against Indonesia.
Rexy said, "The doubles have been maintaining their form and I hope they can deliver tomorrow (today) against Indonesia."
Today Malaysia’s squad will face Indonesian opponents, who are far stronger on paper as compared to Hong Kong and it will be an uphill task for Malaysian ladies to overpower them.
