Defence lets down Ottawa Senators against St. Louis Blues 3-1 -NHL Update
St. Louis Blues were just too much to handle for the Ottawa Senators as they changed goalies but failed to keep the opposition out, losing their seventh straight matchup, 3-1, on Tuesday night, February 7, 2012, at the sold-out Scotiabank Place in Ottawa,
Ontario, Canada.
Ottawa has certainly failed to impress these past few weeks after taking over one of the top spots in the Eastern Conference as the Senators hope for a playoff appearance this time around, but the way they have been playing nowadays, falling down to eighth
and even below will not be surprising to see.
The Senators hold on to the last playoff qualifying spot with 61 points and a 27-22-7 record, ahead of ninth place Florida Panthers by only two points in other words, a single game difference.
St. Louis Blues’ goalie, Brian Elliott, was happy to be back in the city where his National Hockey League (NHL) started and sure did not disappoint his team that gave him the green signal to start only a day earlier.
"It's pretty fun playing against some of your best friends over there. They're having a great year and we just wanted to come here and get a road win. We haven't been as good on the road, so coming in here for kind of a homecoming meant a lot to me and the
guys played hard for me," Brian Elliott said.
Chris Porter and David Perron scored twice, back-to-back, in the first four minutes of the opening period, forcing the Ottawa management to recall their goalie, Craig Anderson, replacing him with Alex Auld, who allowed one goal on the next 14 attempts.
Ottawa captain, Daniel Alfredsson, gave the crowd some hope after potting his 18th of the regular season on a power play opportunity which carried over from the first period as B.J. Crombeen was booked for tripping with less than a minute to go.
David Perron secured the match with his second of the night, which would be the final from both sides.
Blues have the next matchup against New Jersey Devils while Ottawa Senators will be hosting Nashville Predators on Thursday.
