Defence still an area of concern for Pittsburgh Penguins -NHL Update
Pittsburgh Penguins might undoubtedly have the National Hockey League’s (NHL) most powerful offensive duo when it comes to talking about Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, but for a team that has so much to offer, lacks on the defensive end which is an area of concern for sure.
Unable to pickup any significant talent this time around to boost goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins risk the chance of failing to perform in the playoffs again like they were manhandled by a well-rounded team like Philadelphia Flyers.
Penguins have firepower but lack in the defensive department as the world saw Sidney Crosby getting physical last time around and having to step up for team members.
Fleury’s performance during the 2011-2013 regular season was praiseworthy but the postseason just had to be condemned from all possible point of views due to the significant lack of defence to boost the team.
Pittsburgh missed out on their chance to go for Nashville Predators’ defensemen Ryan Suter and Shea Weber and will have to settle with what they have at the moment.
Like Ilya Bryzgalov of Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins will have to motivate Marc-Andre Fleury to make the needed difference if the team hopes on making any significant strides next season, especially in the playoffs.
The next two things that that have Pittsburgh Penguins worried is whether Evgeni Malkin will be able to repeat his performance and will Sidney Crosby stay healthy to perform throughout the season or will he keep going out or making a comeback.
Fortunately, Sidney Crosby finished off the season and playoffs on a high note and stayed healthy till the end after making a comeback near the midway point. Pittsburgh nearly managed to top the Eastern Conference with 108 points, just one behind tying toppers, the New York Rangers.
They were second in the Atlantic Division, thus fourth in the Eastern Conference.
Marc-Andre Fleury has a major role to fit into next season and more in the playoffs when the pressure is at its peak. Without a strong goaltender, Pittsburgh could be facing a tough time next season and an even harsher time in the playoffs.
