Defending Champion Samantha Stosur bows out in the quarter-finals at the US Open – Tennis News
World number seven, Samantha Stosur, couldn’t stick around for a couple of points to upset the top seed Belarusian star, Victoria Azarenka, who won the match in the final set tie-breaker. The Aussie superstar lost the opening set
1-6 but bounced back emphatically well to claim the second battle 6-4. She was kept under the cosh throughout the final set but came back twice from a breakpoint down stage to level the scores and enforce the tie-breaker.
She was 0-4 down in the tie-breaker round as well but jumped back into the contest and levelled the scores at 5-5. However, the 23-year-old Belarusian was smart enough to claim the following two rallies courtesy a drop shot and
a miss hit from Stosur.
The departure of Stosur means that there will be a new champion at the US Open 2012. She won the previous edition of the Championship at New York but couldn’t make it through to the quarter-final stage this time around.
Stosur commented on her performance by stating “The first set didn't really come off at all, but as the match went on I kind of got into it a little bit more and started to see what I was doing was really paying dividends. I just
kept trying to plug away and started playing really well and I thought I really took my opportunities when I had them."
Commenting about her overall season’s performance, the Aussie stated, “It's been a rough year. I came off a pretty rough spot before coming to the US hard-court season and have really been able to turn my form around and come to
New York and play great in all of my matches.”
She believes that the impressive performance and the spirit of fight clearly depicts that she is capable of claiming major titles and the last year’s performance was not a fluke. She is confident that the memories of 2011 US Open
will be revived one day again.
As far as Azarenka is concerned, she has passed the quarter-final stage for the first time in her career. Next up for her is the potential winner of the clash between Marion Bartoli and Maria Sharapova.
