Defending Champion fails to make it to the Tour Championship
It seems that defending champions have no place at the Tour Championship. For a fifth consecutive season, the defending champion for some reason or the other, has failed to make it to the tour championship.
Tiger Woods won the playoffs in 2007 but missed the Tour Championship of 2008 due to an injury. The former world number one then returned to the playoffs and won in 2009.
However, in 2010 again, he could not cope up with injuries and missed the championship. Well Tiger sort of did not miss the playoffs, he was forced out of them due to injuries.
Vijay Singh won the FedEx Cup and Tour Championship in 2008 but he too, following the trend, failed to make it to the East Lake in 2009. In fact, Vijay Singh was knocked out in the second round.
Jim Furyk won the playoffs in 2010 but he failed to make it past the third round in 2011.
The latest scalp has been the 2011 Winner Bill Hass, who was knocked out after his dismissal performance in the BMW Championship.
Bill made four bogeys in his last five holes and, as a result, failed to make it in to the final 30 heading to the East Lake.
"Honestly it seems like the same old story, something I have been doing a lot this year. Under the gun I have not been able to get it done," Haas said.
"It is something I have got to address. When there is some pressure and there is a pressure situation I have got to be able to bear down and shoot a good number and not just blow up. It is frustrating. I do not know what else to say."
Rickie Fowler who missed out on the Ryder Cup spot narrowly will be in the field for the first time at East Lake. Fowler shot a 2-over 74 but ended his poor run at the BMW Championship.
He finished with a birdie and three pars on the last four holes at Crooked Stick Golf and Country Club.
The field at East Lake is loaded with house hold big names. It would be an absolute treat for golf lovers.
