Defending WWE/UFC as a sport? A lot of details inside.

Entertainment - Both UFC fans and WWE fans get entertained by their respectful business/organization. UFC fans get entertained by the realism of the sport. As for Wrestling fans, they get entertained by story lines, the action, the drama, and the list goes on.

Two definitions for the word Sport:

- an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition

- the occupation of athletes who compete for pay

Both MMA and Wrestling have these.

  1. Well the WWE (and other Wrestling Promotions for that matter) are definitely a sport. When you think way back into the 50's (and below) was more about the wrestling where there were 2 out of 3 falls for each match which had rounds (e.g. 5 min per round, with 12 rounds (I've mostly seen it in the UK whick raises the bar to the 70's), where two wrestlers would simply out wrestle the other. Since then, wrestling has evolved to interpret more of an "entertainment" base to it instead of it being straight up skills. Thus making it still a sport, but a sport that has evolved into a different type of wrestling.

MMA (I am a fan but can't be too sure about the details since I'm not a solid fan of it), I believe you are right though there was a time when it was just a sick street fight put in a cage, but has since then evolved into a sport with the addition of rules such as restrictions and time limits with rounds.

  2. wwe is entertainment.

    ufc is human cockfighting.

  3. WWE is just good entertainment, with occasional extreme violence.

UFC is just two guys beating the c**p out of eachother for no good reason.

  4. I like UFC alot but I don't find it as entertaining as wrestling on average. i love a good UFC match but there is so many boring ones. That said I would say its a sport. I love wrestling but I don't know if I'd call it a sport it's undeniably athletic though.

I don't mind when people say its not a sport but for people to think pro wrestlers aren't elite athletes is ridiculous. No pro wrestler could just jump into the octagon without training but similarly a UFC guy would get gassed trying to pull off a 30-45 minute match with HBK, Angle, Samoa Joe, HHH. It's not that their less conditioned it's that lifting and slamming and throwing people uses different muscles than striking and mat wrestling and athleteas train specifically for their sport.

Some MMA fans will always hate wrestling and some wrestling fans will always hate MMA and some Boxxing and traditional sports fans will always hate both but they are all great athletes

Edit: I looked up sport in the dictionary and the most relevant definition was:

(1): physical activity engaged in for pleasure

haha I guess wrestling is a sport after all but from that definition so is s*x ;)

See this is actually where I would say wrestling is not a sport because the guys in the ring are not really competing they are more working together to put the best product forward for the fans, whereas in MMA, Boxxing, Hockey, Football whatever the two sides might care about being exciting and entertaining but it certainly takes a backseat to wanting to win.

I do respect your opinion though and I can defiantly see where your coming from. Great topic by Truth Trials and good arguements by many others aswell.

  5. i wonder why they havent made a section for UFC...Maybe...Just Maybe its bcoz UFC absolutely sucks!!!!!

  6. You nailed it right there. It's either some casual wrestling fan will say WWE is not a sport or you'll have a UFC mark say it's not a sport like them. You summed it all up and defended our position great. People probably won't agree with you because their either not open minded to admit it or they just have too much pride.

To those who say WWE is not a sport and it's just entertainment and say UFC is a sport and not entertainment. That just cancels it out because UFC is suppose to entertain the crowd with the realism in the sport. WWE utilizes their entertainment differently.

Well said and star for interesting question.

Thumbs down and Thumbs up, it doesn't matter what you give me. I believe what Truth Trials says because it's actually true. I've been a MMA and wrestling fan ever since 94' or 95' and I've seen the changes UFC had to do to become a sport.

Thank you for defending it, I just wish people would open up and realize what you just said.

  7. WWE is entertainment not a sport

    UFC is a sport

  8. WWE isnt a sport, its entertainment.

YFC is 2 guys ******* each other rated pg 13

  9. oh c**p! i never knew that. i've always been a wrestling fan, but people kept bashing me about me liking wrestling. i didn't know what to say and they kept saying ufc is a sport, but now i have something to say.

wow, thanks and thoughtful thinking. you're pretty smart truth. i've watch a couple of ufc matches and yeah, i was entertained because of it be real hits and their skills they use! i mainly watch wrestling because of the different ways they use their entertainment and yeah.

thanks again =) at least now i won't have to worry about ufc fans bashing me much about wrestling not being a sport. i'll send them this link! =)

  10. Vince McMahon says the WWE is Sports Entertainment. I usually try to listen to what billionaires and millionaires have to say because I'd like to be one someday. I watch WWE & TNA and any Brock Lesnar UFC/MMA match on YouTube or Dailymotion.

  11. I know I'm going to get thumbs down just because you're right and others don't think of it as you just did. You're right, I've been a fan of both and watched it in the early 90's also. Many people think just because wrestling is pre-determined it's not a sport. Back then, it was named as a sport! UFC back then wasn't called a sport, but was mainly known as just street fighting as you just said! When UFC made their rules and weight division and became mainstream it was then called a sport. WWE had all those already for the longest as I can remember, but fans will just say "it's not a sport, it's just entertainment". Just because it's entertainment doesn't mean it's not a sport, UFC is entertaining as well, so they basically keep contradicting themselves.

    Good topic and defending.

    Starred!
