Defending champ Mark Williams surges into Round 2: 2012 German Masters
Defending champion, Wales’ Mark Williams ousted Ireland’s Ken Doherty by an easy score line of 5-0 in the opening match of 2012 German Masters tournament at the Tempodrom arena in Berlin. The encounter was a piece of cake for the Welsh Potting Machine as
he cruised with the whitewash victory in no time.
The former World Snooker Champion came strong at the baize and in no time, he dominated the match with his impressive shots. The Welshman did not let his opponent make any impact on his game during the clash and edged past him firing some cracking knocks
of 50, 51 and 107 to win the opening match and make his way into the second round of the tournament.
On the other hand, the veteran and 1997 World Snooker Championship winner, Ken Doherty was totally out of shape and was not able to cope with the pressure exerted by the defending champion. The 36-year-old has got a flying start in the tournament which will
definitely be advantageous for him in the coming matches.
“To beat anyone 5-0 is a good result,” said World Number Two Williams in his post match interview with World Snooker, “Ken's a very tough opponent so to beat someone of his calibre is even better. This is an excellent arena so I want to still be here at
the weekend to take in the atmosphere. He'll have to watch me walking around in my tracksuit for a few more days now. I thought he was talking about himself.”
In his second round match, Williams might face the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open winner, Stuart Bingham or the former World Snooker Champion, Peter Ebdon.
Meanwhile, the reigning World Snooker Champion, Scotland’s John Higgins also surged into the second round beating England’s Mark Davis by the score line of 5-1. The match was an easy win for the Scotsman as he cleared the table with his impressive snooker
skills. He will be facing compatriot Stephen Maguire in a Round 2 clash at the Tempodrom arena in Berlin.
