Defending champion Diana Luna fires 69 in the opening round of German Open
The defending champion Diana Luna shot a 69 in the first round of the Unicredit Ladies German Open, sharing the 8th spot with twelve other contenders.
Luna, who belongs to Italy, had displayed a stunning performance in the last edition of the German Open, grabbing a 7-stroke victory against Minea Blomqvist of Finland.
Keeping in view her superb form, commentators declared Luna the best the player in the field. They said that the Italian prodigy might not have stunned the spectators in the opening round, she can bounce back
on the second day.
The weather conditions on Thursday were calm, hence players were prone to take full advantage.
Luna kicked off the round with plenty of confidence, as she parred the first two holes and made two back-to-back birdies on the par-5 3rd and the difficult par-3 4th hole.
The defending champion avoided making any bogey on the front nine.
However, on the back nine, she seemed to lose momentum on some holes. She recorded an eagle on the par-5 11th.
She then made a bogey on the 13th.
Analysts said that getting off to a good start must have boosted Luna’s confidence and she will try to maintain the form in the next rounds. However, they said, her worse-than-average performance on the back
nine marred her score.
The first round went well, as four players shared the lead. Commentators said that the next rounds may see tougher competition, as most of the players finished their opening round tying with rivals.
One of the most prominent players was Carly Booth, who posted a stunning 67 in the round to share the lead with three other contenders.
Booth has been going superb in the current season, as she won the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open 2012. Speaking to the media about her solid performance, Booth said that she was glad that she
cheered the spectators once again.
“It was just very solid, especially my last nine. The front nine I missed quite a few putts so I could have been a lot more under par but I left a lot of putts short. I’m happy with today’s round,” Scottish
teen shared.
