Defending champion Ian Poulter wins in both rounds of the Volvo Match Play Championship
The defending champion Ian Poulter is on the top of Pool Player group, as he earned 4 points by winning both the rounds at the Volvo Match Play Championship.
The 36-year-old Englishman displayed an amazing performance in both the rounds, played at the Finca Cortesin, Casares in Andalucía, Spain.
He started the round on Thursday and shot three birdies, scoring four points against tough rival, John Senden.
The first round was very appealing. He showed an average performance and was bogey-free throughout the round. Senden faced a defeat by three points, as he only shot one birdie in the first round.
In the second round of the European Tour event, Poulter again amazed the spectators and his fans, for hitting seven points on the leaderboard.
He carded four massive birdies and also earned benefits from the bogeys of Lewis, who only recorded three points by three birdie shots, in total. He was mostly at par, however carded three bogeys also.
Hence, Poulter is now dominating his group and happy for defending his title. He recorded 4 points by winning both the rounds and is now heading for the third round on Saturday.
"I don't think either of us were 100 per cent switched on - I guess it was hard to get that adrenaline rush you normally get in match play," Poulter said. “It's always nice to play well over the first couple of days, and I'll be going into the weekend with
that mind set and rather than obviously playing okay”.
He added: “I’ve driven the ball nicely and holed key putts at the right time, and that's obviously what I did last year throughout the weekend. I holed nice putts and hit good shots but I definitely holed putts at the right time, and that's obviously the
key to playing well in match play”.
Lewis will also be moving further, as he also defeated Senden in the second round. Senden was unable to win and faced a defeat twice. He is now eliminated from the mage event and will not be going further.
The tournament has reached a heightened degree of competition. Poulter and Lewis are going fine. However, they both have to deliver their best moving into the third round. Analysts said that only consistency will be helpful from Saturday.
