Defending champion Martin Kaymer misses the cut at the PGA Championship at Atlanta
Martin Kaymer, the best known golfer from Germany, who was also the defending champion at the PGA Championship until yesterday, has now failed to make the halfway cut at the last major of the season.
Kaymer’s sad state of affairs have virtually lingered on for the whole year now after his last victory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in January where he took over the fast approaching Rory McIlroy with a convincing eight-stroke victory.
“Playing‑wise it was fine.  It's just nothing went in.  I hit every green in regulation on the back nine and I just made one putt and it was on the last hole. I was in good position, but it didn't happen.  It was a frustrating day.” Kaymer was later talking
to the reporters. “I just tried to keep fighting until the end because you never know what's going to happen.  It's a tough finish here the last four holes, so maybe you could pick up a couple shots. But overall it was a frustrating tournament because nothing
went my way.”
The frustration was all the more evident when the former world number one remained birdie-less for most part of the front nine and decided to dig deeper into the turf to pull in some low scores on the back nine. He dropped five shots on the back nine to
call it a day for three-over, 73 carding an aggregate of five-over.
Kaymer won the event last year on a nail-biting standoff against the long-hitting Bubba Watson on the Playoff and many of the critics had considered his victory as a strike of luck rather than form.
On a question of whether he had been concentrating a lot on his swing and has in turn neglected the other necessary facets of the game, Kaymer disagreed saying that he only concentrates on his swing when on the range and tries to be natural while playing
on course.
The 26-year-old shot to fame when he soared to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) earlier in the year after his runners up finish at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship at Tucson, Arizona. He later lost the top slot to lee Westwood
in a few weeks time.
