Defending champion Matthew happy to be back in Mexico
Scottish Catriona Matthew, who is going to defend her title at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational 2012, has said that she is more than happy to be back in Mexico and her biggest goal for the season is to win here once again.
Speaking during her pre-tournament interview to the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, at Guadalajara Country Club on Wednesday, Matthew said that she still relishes her last year’s victory at the prestigious tournament, and this time, she is taking her game more seriously than before.
“It feels great to come down here. I love it. I love coming down here I think the weather is like this every day. I’m sure it beats Scotland. The tournament is great so it’s always one of my favourite stops on tour,” said the defending champion who racked up her first major title at the Ricoh Women’s British Open in August 2009.
Although the LPGA phenom has not been able to end her LPGA victory drought since 2011 Lorena Ochoa Invitational, her game has now taken a new shape. She said that she has been practising hard on the practice range, which has helped her fix most of the flaws in her putting and long game.
“The last couple of months I’ve been playing really well”.
Matthew went on to say that her performance on the LET (Ladies European Tour) has helped her gain much-needed confidence.
“I had a slow start to the year but it’s come together with the win in Ireland during the summer that really boosted my confidence,” she said.
Matthew is one of the most shinning stars on the LPGA, yet some observers say that the number of victories she has recorded on the Tour has been dwarfing her.
Having grabbed four titles on the Tour so far, Matthew could have done much better as she has been associated with the LPGA since 1995.
But the Scottish star thinks that it is once again time for her and all the European contenders to gain Mexican exposure—something she can rely on in order to further improve her position in world rankings.
Commentators said that Matthew is aware that winning has now become more crucial than before, with the current season fast coming to a close in December. The end of the 2012 LPGA Tour is going to leave a promising impact for some contenders, while some could be left regretting their performance slump.
