Defenseman Nicklas Grossmann wins 4-year deal from Philadelphia Flyers valued $3.5 million a year
Philadelphia Flyers’ defenseman, Nicklas Grossmann, has successfully avoided the possibility of becoming an unrestricted free agent from July 01, 2012, by winning a new multiyear deal from the team.
Grossmann is expected to earn $14 million from the new four-year contract. The deal’s value averages about $3.5 million a year. Other terms have not been made public.
Flyers’ management has also confirmed the news following successful negotiations with the player’s agent.
Flyers acquired the defenseman in a trade with the Dallas Stars in February 2012 and he was set to have fully serviced his previously signed deal by July this year, making himself available on the free agency market.
Under the arrangement with Stars, Flyers sent their second-round pick of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) draft and third-round pick from 2013 draft, in exchange for Grossmann.
Both parties are pleased over reaching an agreement on the new deal.
The continuous availability of the player is going to provide Flyers with more depth at the defence. This will also provide the player with much stability of his career.
He has played 22 games for Flyers this season. His performance includes 68 hits, six assists, 52 blocked shots and plus-5 overall rating.
Grossmann has remained a significant part of the team since his arrival, contributing to the team’s wins to a great extent.
With expiry of his previous deal looming large, Flyers were interested in locking him to a long-term deal. Both parties were reported having some reservations over the length of the new contract and some other unknown terms.
Following the breakthrough, it is confirmed that Grossmann will be staying at Philadelphia for another four years. It will be his first playoffs for Flyers, and his form and performance will be crucial to their victory campaigns.
Most recently, Grossmann was reported to have suffered an unknown lower-body injury. He was injured in Flyers’ game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, which was played in an unpleasant atmosphere.
Grossman’s injury requires him to sit out for seven to ten days at least.
As of the latest, it is not confirmed when the player is expected to recover from the injury to rejoin the squad.
However, with the playoffs starting in a week’s time, Grossmann is likely to be hundred percent fit to play.
Now with the peace of mind about his future, he can focus more on improvement of his game skills and performance output, adding to the team’s winning chances in the second round.
