Defensive Tackle Mike Patterson will miss Philadelphia Eagles training camp – NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson will not be able to attend training camp, according to Eagles head trainer Rick Burkholder.
Patterson had a surgery six months ago and it was expected that he would recover fully within six months, just before the start of training camp. This does not seem the case now.
Talking to the media, Burkholder said:
"It's something that we thought he'd be ready because today is six months since the surgery, and he's not and that's just what happens with healing. Everyone heals differently and we anticipate he'll heal up fully and be back playing again. It's just not
today."
No official timeline is given about Patterson’s full recovery. He is placed on a reserve/non-injury list.
Patterson’s physicians are not fully sure right now about his ability to absorb the physical toughness of this game.
During training camp in August last year, Patterson endured a seizure for about four minutes. Doctors diagnosed an arteriovenous malformation. For this, he had a surgery in January during which doctors had to cut a little piece of bone in his skull.
Patterson will participate in the team meetings and will train with strength and reconditioning Coach Barry Rubin.
Patterson himself was very disappointed about him not getting the opportunity to train with his fellow teammates. He said:
"It kind of threw me off because I thought I could be ready right now and able to practice, But when (Dr. Spetzler) looked at it, he just felt more comfortable if I just wait a little longer. Once it's over, I can continue and not have to worry about any
of this."
Even after having the surgery, Patterson was able to play 15 games last season. He missed one game because of flu.
The recent development is also disappointing for Eagles, as their main player has been sidelined. Yet, Eagles have been cautious about having a backup at the defensive tackle position.
Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid has made it clear that he has plans to curtail this situation as the team’s rotation policy has made all the players ready to be the starter.
They have many players, including Antonio Dixon, Derek Landri, Cullen Jenkins and the first-round pick of this year’s draft Fletcher Cox, who will compete for the starting place.
