Defensive end Mario Williams wins hefty $100 million, six-year deal from Buffalo Bills-NFL News
The Buffalo Bills gave Mario Williams a $100 million, six-year deal on Thursday, March 15, 2012, making him the highest paid defensive player in the history of the National Football League (NFL).
He is just behind receiver, Calvin Johnson, who is the highest paid player at any position with any team. He has been handed over a $132 million contract by the Detroit Lions a day earlier.
Williams’ payout includes $50 million in guaranteed money.
Following the signing, the player could not manage to hold back his excitement over winning the hefty amount.
He said:
“I'm ecstatic, very excited. I can't wait for the opportunity. There's no pressure. I've played against great quarterbacks. And I'm looking forward to playing against these quarterbacks, chasing them down and making things happen."
The breakthrough was reported after talks between the player and management for consecutive two days, and the team is apparently content to have reached to an amicable solution.
Buffalo Bills’ general manager, Buddy Nix, said:
"We got a lot better. Good things come to the people that wait. So you guys have been waiting, and we've got a good thing here."
Williams was drafted by the Houston Texans in 2006 and since then has improved consistently to lead the league in pass rushing.
The manager added:
"The No. 1 guy for us from Day 1 was this guy. Obviously, you don't do anything until he hits free agency, but it's been a long process. And it's been fun, especially since it turned out right."
William continuously played for Texans for six years, and has the franchise-best 53 sacks. For the last couple of years, he was down in fitness and form due to some chest muscle problems.
He could only manage to play five games during last season due to the same problem. In 2010-11 season, he missed three games due to a surgery for sports hernia. The player now aims to remain fit and prove his game skills.
Williams was among the top three bright spots on the free agency including QB Peyton Manning, who still remains without a contract and Calvin Johnson.
Williams’ signing is encouraging for Bills’ fans, who are apparently frustrated with the consistent poor form of their team, and expecting a turnaround in the future.
A number of them, in fact, had campaigned for the player’s signing, urging both sides to work out towards reaching a common ground.
Many were even present at the team’s headquarters to greet and welcome the player following his signing.
