Defensive end Phillip Merling awaits suitor after release by Miami Dolphins-NFL News
The four-year stay of defensive end, Phillip Merling, at the Miami Dolphins has met a rather disappointing end as the player having remained away from the starting line for successive and excessive number of games over the past four seasons has finally been
cut from the squad.
Merling was picked up by Dolphins as 32nd overall draft in 2008 and has continuously played for the side since then. Unfortunately, he was given the starting role in only five games during all this period.
During the past two seasons, he was able to record seven tackles. He missed as many as 11 games during the season owing to an Achilles tendon injury.
He was hoping to rejoin the squad during the offseason workout this year, but as of Monday, April 23, 2012, Dolphins said to have waived him off.
It is not clear if he is going to try moving elsewhere in the league for which he will have to wait a bit longer than expected because almost all managers are very much focused on the draft recruitment options at the moment.
Dolphins themselves are front runners in the draft campaign following strong criticism on their managers and coaches by local fans, who have also protested the way the managers are handling the situation of the squad.
The team has pursued rebuilding at certain positions almost every year, but did not achieve the desired results during all those campaigns.
It is rather annoying experience for the fans, who irrespective to the tall claims from the managers, do not see those changes making any difference to the team’s overall performance.
The managers have particularly come under fire recently over the campaign to pursue signing of quarterback, Peyton Manning, who was available on the free agency following release by the Indianapolis Colts.
A number of the team’s diehard fans who protested in front of the team headquarters accused the managers of not making serious efforts towards exploring the possibility of bringing Manning to Miami.
Despite the repeated assurances from the managers, the fans are not happy with the move of the player to the Denver Broncos. Manning did workout for Dolphins and met with the team’s officials as well, but decided against joining them, adding to the disappointment
of the local fans.
