  1. You need a better teacher.....that is a LAME question that only a lazy mediocre teacher would ask.

  2. Wendy is right, we have not achieved the full meaning of the word because we have wars.  Civilization is achieved by people cooperating. Before people lived in a survival mode of small groups making what they needed to survive but civilization is living beyond survival.  It is larger groups coming together and achieving a more productive and comfortable life for all.  Trade and communication become of ever- increasing importance. People achieve leisure time to ponder questions of life and art has a greater influence.  People have to be civil in order to cooperate which means laws and manners are developed.

  3. Well this is a start:

A civilization is one that has specialized jobs and can support its elders. There is a surplus of food to go around which allows for those specialized jobs.

  4. I hope one of your teachers didn't give you this assignment.  It's a dumb question in my opinion.  Civilization is neither important nor unimportant.  It happened, for good or bad.

But if you can't mouth off at your teacher, define civilization and that will give you the importance.  Ask yourself what existed before civilization and also whether it was better or worse.  We delude ourselves if we think civilization is better.  In fact we delude ourselves if we think we're really civilized.  We are not, and the world is in many ways a worse place than it was before we began overpopulating -- before the industrial revolution.  Good luck with your assignment and sorry I can't give you a canned answer.  YOo need to do the work yourself.
