  1. There are two possible answers to this question. Firstly, any animal that feeds only on meat can be called a carnivore - it is carnivorous by nature. Secondly, in zoological terms the word often refers only to animals of the order Carnivora. Animals of this order are defined by their slicing cheek teeth, called carnassials. The order is divided into two branches, the Feliformia (cat-like) families, and the Caniformia (dog-like) families. The Feliformia families are the Felidae (cat family), Hyaenidae (hyena family), Viverridae (civet and genet family) and Herpestidae (mongoose family). The Caniformia families are the Canidae (dog family), Mustelidae (weasel family), Procyonidae (raccoon family), Ursidae (bear family), Otariidae (eared seal family) and Phocidae (true seal family).
