Define hostel (preferbly europens)?

i have stayed in a few hostels but have trouble defining it to others in the states the most commen respose is so its like a homeless shelter (which ive never stayed in)you pay for which isint true so thougts

a very cheap hotel (would not even consider that) that caters to poor college/vagabound kids. Basically a place to rest your head one step above the train station.

Backpackers ..... !! , They are certainly not homeless shelters.

It's a basic hotel where you might share the room and the bathroom with the other guests
