  2. Guy in a garage shouting and being a pain in the ****,goes back to car afterwards and numberplate reads W654 SHY -that would be irony

  3. Irony is technically when a result is the opposite of what is expected.  It's a tough idea to grasp.

For example, you would never expect a fire station to catch on fire, but when it does, that's irony.

  4. Oxford Dictionary: "the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite."

Online dictionary: "the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning."

My 'definition': "Saying something that means the opposite, happened, is happening without your knowledge or even hipocracy in a humorous way

  5. Literally it's saying the opposite of what you mean.

These days it's common to mean something has happened that is the opposite of what you would want to happen.

  15. Alanis Morrisette says "A traffic jam, when you're already late,

A no smoking sign, on your cigarette break"

Those situations are not ironic, they're just annoying.

Ironic would be a traffic jam, when you're a town planner on the way to an important conference about transport strategy. Or perhaps a no smoking sign in a tobacconist shop.

So Alanis Morrisette doesn't actually know the meaning of the word "irony",

    Now isn't that ironic!

  16. sarcastic.

  17. George Bush
