Define medical herbalism.Why should it be studied as a part of medical science?

Herbalism is bunk.  Besides, it's unnecessary since many medicines are derived from herbs.  The difference is they are synthesized so the quality and dosage can be controlled.  There is nothing inherently special about something that's called natural.  Hemlock is natural.

EDIT: It's so frustrating seeing the anti-medicine crowd out there thinking something "natural" is automatically better than a controlled, synthesized drug.  The key word here being "controlled".  Besides, all of the major "natural" medicine producers are owned by Big Bad Medicine anyway.

Nowadays there is a strong desire to go back to nature in curing diseases. Natural medicine as it is commonly called is safer than the use of synthetic medicines. Natural medicine, herbal medicine or alternative medicine refer to the same approach of medical practice using plant produce or herbs (or basically anything that nature can provide).

Why should it be studied? Its where medicine originated from.

Herbs were used in healing for many thousands of years.  It is only relatively recently that there has been a cultural prejudice against them in favor of chemically synthesized drugs, and so a lot of knowledge has been lost.  This includes how to use the herbs and in what quantities for particular uses.  

I think herbs should be studied as part of medical science because they still have enormous utility in healing. (Obviously, I am not talking about natural poisons like hemlock.)    Herbs are also a lot cheaper than the drugs created by the pharmaceutical industry.

Medicine started as herbal not the other way around. It should be studied so that people have an informed choice whether to use drugs that sometimes do more damage than help. Natural medicine has no side effects and is safe for people of all ages.
