  1. Metropolitan railway

Basically a rail line within a city, such as the NYC subway.

  2. Years ago this was called intercity, or light rail service / trolley lines, As things progressed we shifted to buses that weren't dependent on rails and overhead wires for their routes. Since things are shifting to Green don't be surprised if things shift back to trolleys or at least electric buses like in Philadelphia PA.

  3. A rail service covering the city and usually its suburbs. That's why it is called metro-rail (metro-"metropolitan").

  4. It's derived from "metropolitian railway" - it means a system designed to service a city within the boundaries of the city and suburban limits.  It can be light rail or regular guage (width of the track spacing) a monorail or tram based for exmaple.
