  1. they die and become food for other plants

  2. Breaking down of dying chemical compounds into a state of eminent deterioration.

  3. Dead plants rot. Or, for something really fancy, entropy resumes its march to the end of the universe.

  4. Ditritivores begin the process by reducing the size of the detritus (plant or animal). Plant specialists, earthworms, termites, springtails, beetles, slugs & pillbugs, consume but only the decomposing surface portion is digestible so the rest is excreted to become detritus and begin decomposing again. This cycle continues until the material is reduced to inorganics.

Decomposers must complete the process by breaking down organic compounds into inorganic forms. Decomposing osmotrophs, heterotrophic bacteria, and fungi, digest  plant cells outside their bodies, then absorb what they need returning the rest to the soil.

  5. plant breaking up
