A reflex is a reaction to some kind of stimulus

A reflex action is a rapid, immediate reaction to a stimulus which is below the level of consiousness. ie we are only aware of it's occurance after the event. Reflex actions are usually to remove a limb/body part from potential harm. eg withdrawal reflex when touching something sharp or hot.
