  1. An electrolyte is a substance that conducts electricity.  Usually we think of an electrolyte as an aqueous solution that contains ions.  These ions have electrical charges and are mobile.  As they move, they are capable of conducting electricity.

    Sea water contains a number of different ions, with the most common being sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl-).  Because of these dissolved ions, sea water conducts electricity and is an electrolyte.
