I am being an extra in a movie tomorrow and they want us to look like home schooled kids, I am guessing something nerdy looking. Any ideas of this look?

  1. Well, really, homeschooled kids look just like most any other kids.

I'm thinking about the kids who are in my son's coop classes and clubs.  If you were to meet them on the street or at the mall you would never know they were homeschooled by just looking at them.

I hope you don't stereotype in your role.

If you want to see a portrayal of homeschooled kids in a movie, go out and rent the move RV with Robin Williams.

  2. well, I'm a 15/f homeschooler, and I go for a slightly dykey throwback 80's look:P

But then, I'm a bit of a loner from other hmschlers.

    :D

  3. look for fear in their eyes

mommy isn't ther eto protect them

home schooling isn't about the children it is about the mother's irrational fears

and her attempts to keep her child totally dependent on her, thereby making the child unfit for the rough and tumble of the real world

  4. Its not really about the clothes. Try to think of the most socially handicapped person you can think of and what they would wear and how would they act?.  Or think of a really sheltered naive child that is forced to listen to a completely unqualified adult teach him stuff.  I don't know...what DO they wear?

  5. pj's all the way

    footy ones!

  6. Nerd it up... a cape, glasses taped together, flip flops with sock, spandex leggings with suspenders and a loose pink shirt (tucked in).

    Totally cool :D

EDIT: thanks hsmomlovinit for getting this was a joke. lol

  7. Well, my six year old usually wears baggy jeans, one of his flame or dragon button up shirts, and a mohawk.

My eight year old usually wears skorts and a tank top, with her heelies

My nine year old usually wears jeans and gap t-shirts. She has a pink stripe, but I doubt you'd want to go that far for one-day extra.

My 13 year old, with the baggy jeans again, and usually a gamer shirt and vans.

    Jeez, thanks for the assumption.

  8. It would be easier to stereotype if you were a girl....

The boys all look like regular boys.

    But let's see....

Kind.  Helpful.  Outgoing.  Hardworking.  Full of fun and adventure.

    Can you look like that.?

    Girls --  Long denim jumpers.

Additionally:  to my homeschool friends --- I am really JUST KIDDING!!!!  ROFLOL.

My home-school kids pick out their own clothes and purchase with their own money.

Nike, New Balance, etc. for shoes.

Old Navy, Walmart, Macy's, Kohl's, Burlington, Ross, Penney's, Sears, American Eagle, Carrhartts, etc. for clothes.  They'll probably laugh at me for getting some of these wrong but they shop at all of the local stores.

Aw... a thumbs down???  boo hoo.  Can I get a thumbs up please?

Woohoo!  I got one of each!

  9. Homeschool kids really do look like any other kids - maybe not to the extreme of skimpy or trying to emulate a celebrity, but they wear normal clothes just like anyone else.  I teach homeschooled high schoolers, and there are all kinds of "looks" in my class.

The one thing I would say is that they don't feel the need to look like anyone else - they wear what they're comfortable in.  For some kids, that's Hollister and Abercrombie, and for others it's skater clothes.  For others, jeans and a t-shirt are just fine.  My son wears whatever he feels like that day - usually something along the line of sweats and a hoodie or jeans and a favorite shirt.  (He's 10, though, and really doesn't care about what he wears, lol.)

Please don't go with the stereotype...it's just old.  Decide what your character would wear - what they're interested in - and go with it.  That's what a homeschooled kid would do - dress to who they are instead of who others expect them to be.

Edit - curly, thanks for the chuckle :-)

  10. disregard what "special-..." says cuz she/he is really stupid. i was homeschooled my whole life. i wear makeup...jewlery...etc. & i like certain trends. however...im more PICKY in the trend department. like if something comes out i dont like..i just stay in the old style til something new comes along that actually looks good.

most of my clothes i get at sears which have some real good brands. i like gap to but since i moved to a new location....there's no gap here yet. jessica is a real good clothes/jewlery brand that sears sells. & i like bikinis too....

& as for what "i come from under the hill" just said....i thought i read harry potter one to many times. LOL it sounds more like he's describing harry potter for the boy stereotype...lol

  11. It's not nerdy.

    It's HOMELY.

kinda ugly.  no makeup if you are a girl.  definitely not trendy clothing of any kind.  If a boy the suit should look like it was from the 1940s and maybe a bit moth-eaten.  A girl might wear a dress that was home sewn and so it will look a little dishevelled and the seams not straight.

Imagine how they dressed on "little house on the prairie" and try to duplicate that.

  12. Sorry but I have to laugh! Nerdy?? I think of home schooled kids and I see brand names Old Navy, Abercrombie, and American Eagle. My sisters kids live in brand names and we get lots of hand me downs from her. My kids although not in brand names unless they're hand me downs are usually dressed very nicely (my daughter think's she's a fashonista) in jeans and a printed tee or nice top. My daughter already has her clothes picked out for Girl Scouts Thursday and if it's not just so then she will change 10 times until it is. I think that's pretty normal for a 9 year old!

Edit: Kahaki pants and polo style shirts are the school uniform here. So much for that steriotype!

  13. I would say regular kid-- average children who look and dress their age.

No girls trying to look 5 years older than they are, 10 yr olds in make-up wearing hoochie-tight clothes.

No boys in $250 sneakers with their pants drooping to show off their drawers.

Tuck an actual book under their arms maybe.

  14. well im homeschooled but i look normal but for kids that have been homeshooled all there life (usually) are very disturbed nerdy, goody tissues kids so dress like an old fashiond nerd i guess lol

  15. haha, I'm home schooled and I'm not nerdy, im normal. But i know other people that are home schooled and they're pretty werid..

  16. OMG dude.....homeschoolers are just like everyone else not weird not dorky not NERDY Geeez.....most likely more unique cause they decide not to follow stupid trends and be them Selves!

  17. I didn't know they had a look!  I have many friends who homeschool & all their kids look completely normal.

My guess is not really nerdy, but more eclectic like things don't really go together.  Homeschooling is all about being an individual & not just following the current trends.  Either this or in all organic non-bleached cotton clothes.

    Have fun.

  18. My homeschooled son wears cargo pants and Tony Hawk tee shirts, with DC skate shoes -- skater dude all the way, including long hair and hat.

My daughter looks like a typical teenaged girl.

  19. Haha!  I was home schooled my whole life, and there is no look for this.  But I will tell you what most non-home schooled people think we look like

Boys: Dark Blue jeans and a plaid, buttoned down shirt, with sneakers, and hair combed to the side.

Girls:  Long jean skirts and short sleeved shirt (doesn't matter what kind)  and sneakers with white socks. And long hair either in a braid, or the front half pulled back.

    Good luck!

  20. just be in ur underwear. thats how i imagine it. lol

  21. If you want the sterotype, I can give you a few ideas.

For a boy, probably kahky pants or shorts (depending on how old you are) and a polo shirt. Comb your hair to give it that "my mom cuts my hair" look, and maybe put on some glasses and a pocket protector or big thick watch.  Plain white or black socks and school-boy sneakers would work nicely I think.

For a girl, probably a long dennim skirt and the same kind of polo shirt, only in a girlish color. Wear a headband and give your hair and face a neat, innocent look. Delicate socks and mary-jane type shoes should work

This of course is only a stereotype, and if not for the sake of the film, I would not encourage it.

  22. Why would you want to perpetuate a stereotype in a movie? Do you know how many people are clueless about homeschoolers and will believe that what you wear in that movie actually represents homeschoolers?

I have to say that by far, the most I could say is that it is a casual look--jeans and basic shirts. :) Usually nothing outlandish nor skimpy.
