I have a set of northing and easting coordinates as a reference point. Now I have to define another point which is 5000m east and 5000m north of this reference point.

Can I simply add the 5000m to the Easting coordinate and 5000m to the Northing coordinate?

  1. It is not that simple and straightforward as you imagine. In fact, it is wrong. The position is presumed to have been expressed in degrees, minutes and seconds in the absence of any indication from your side. In any case you must get the figure for the point of reference in deg, min and sec 's.

1minute(1/60 th of a degree) in the northing equals 1853.66 meters. Approximately 5561m equal to 3min. 1minute equals a nautical mile (=6080 feet) actually. So  5000m equals to 2min 42sec.

For the Easting you need to do one more calculation. Calculate 'cos L', where the 'L' stands for latitude  (see reference, of which I have no clue). Divide 5000m by 'Cos L'.

That is get [5000/Cos L] in meters. Divide this result by 1853.66 m. You will get a whole number that is 'min'. The fraction is multiplied to get 'sec'.
