Question:

Definition of a "retainer"?

I just talked to a man who is considering hiring me as a nanny for his son who he shares 50% custody of. He said that he would pay me a "retainer" until his scheduling needs become more consistent. Does anyone have any idea what this means?

  1. It means he wants to pay you for s*x

  2. He retains you for your services. You need to make yourself available any time that you agree on to work for him. He pays you the retainer whether you work or not. If the retainer is large enough, take the job. If it's not, ask for a larger amount.
