Definition of a realist?

I'm starting to think its the same as being a pessimist? It's almost like it's wrong to be an optimist in a cynical world?

Realist = a person who tends to view or represent things as they really are.

Often when I try to show the pessimists in this world what reality looks like they tell me that I'm wrong and that it's not how the world works or what it really looks like. People don't want to view things realistically.

I've never thought of being realistic as being pessimistic. On the other hand there are people that wrongly label them self as realists when they are not since their view on the world is biased.

I do agree that it's hard to be realistic or optimistic in this world since people in general don't want to hear it. I don't understand why people want to live their lives feeling bad about things that's really not a problem.
