  1. The definition of a two-paper town refers to the number of newspapers (as explained above).

  2. Well, in my town, there's the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press. It used to be (and this was common) that one would come out in the morning, and one would come out in the afternoon (so they could scoop each other).

Also, one is typically seen as conservative, and one is typically seen as liberal. The editorial page will usually support that view.

In answer to your second question, yeah, you're right.

If a community has enough people to support buying two newspapers, who compete with each other for ad revenue, then two papers can survive. However, those newspapers will always be at each others throats, with their main goal to kill off  the other paper so they can dominate. Eventually, one side may win.

  3. It means one that has both a liberal and conservative newspaper. Here ours died 25 years ago when they merged into one liberal one.
