Definition of when something cannot be explained by elements it is made up from?

for example, the human brain can be explained using biology and chemistry usually through a break down of what it is

however, knowing the brain is a combination of cells/chemical processes and so on does not really help explain how it is that this combination results in human consciousness

in that case, the product of combining various elements is something that goes beyond the elements themselves - the combining elements produces something totally new, with seemingly not much relation to the components

i know that there is a word to explain this situation, but i can't remember what it is

(ps: this is not a question about human awareness or processes of the brain)
