Definitions of mapping/camping words and terms?

ok. I'm going on a school camp tomorrow and we need to know words like these for map reading. Can any of you define them for me?

knoll, gully, saddle, ridge, basin, valley.

are there any others you think I should know?

  1. Sure can here ya go...

    knoll- a small hill.

    valley- a lower section of land between higher elevations usually where a river is.

    gully- a small valley that drains rainwater into a larger valley.

    ridge- narrow elevated land.

    saddle- a ridge that connects 2 higher elevated places.

    basin- a lower part of land surrounded by higher land around it.

    here are some other words for you...

    dell- a small valley of trees

    butte- a lone hill/mountain rising abruptly above surrounding land

    pass- a route across a low depression through a mountain area

  2. Knoll saddle and ridge are all higher areas while gully, basin and valley are all low lying areas.  

  3. This trip sounds interesting; are they teaching map reading in general or are you going to be doing geocaching? Either way it could be a really good time.

    Let's see down and dirty def's:

    knoll; a small round hill.

    gulley; a trench or gulch often with running water after rains.

    ridge; an elevated body/structure usually elongated in shape.

    saddle; a ridge connecting two higher structures.

    basin; a depression sometimes called a bowl.

    valley; the low point between two elevated structures (hills/moutains) usually elongated in shape.
