Tottenham Hotspur striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Moldova-c2957 in a World Cup qualifying game, and said that this might be his last major tournament.
This was the first competitive start for the striker in over two years. The player had a decent game for the Three Lions, in an overall impressive team display.
Defoe worked hard in the game and had a few shots on goal, but could not score. The player still justified his selection as England cruised to victory.
The Tottenham forward is closing in on his 50th cap with the national side, and having reached the age of 29, the player realises that he may not be able to feature in an England jersey in the coming tournaments.
The player, who made his debut for England eight years ago against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sweden-c3015, said that it has been an honour to play for his country, and admitted that he may not be around years down the line.
Speaking to English press and reporters, Defoe said:
"Will this World Cup be my last? Probably. Have I been thinking about that? Yes.”
"I know I’m getting older but I feel younger so it’s all right. I loved playing in the last World Cup [in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/South-Africa-c757]. It was an unbelievable experience, not just because of the games, but the people.”
England have recently move up the world rankings and have taken up third spot, despite an under-par performance in the Euro 2012 tournament. Defoe said that although this is an impressive accolade, winning tournaments with the national team holds much more
importance to him.
“It’s good to be third and we should be there. People talk about them but they don’t really mean anything because it’s about winning matches. At the Euros we felt so close and were knocked out on penalties [against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926], but it was another quarter-final.
It’s important we bounce back and start the World Cup campaign with a win.”
The Premier League again showed its quality as many of the league’s players made their mark in the qualifying games last night. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 were on the score
