Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe admits that Tottenham need to improve the defensive aspect of their game and work harder as a unit.
Manager Andre Villas-Boas recently held a meeting with all of the club’s defenders in a bid to discuss the defensive side of their game. Tottenham have conceded 10 goals in the final 15 minutes of their recent games, and are tied with bottom placed Reading
on this record.
An interesting stat reveals that had all the Premier League games lasted 80 minutes, Tottenham would have been at the top of the table.
Villas-Boas therefore was genuinely concerned about this statistic, and held a meeting with his defenders in order to discuss how they could improve on this. Tottenham’s last game saw them manage a 1-0 victory over Swansea City. The manager was glad to see
his team hold on to the narrow lead and secure all 3 points which took them back to 4th spot.
The team has been good going forward, and scoring goals has not been a problem, especially with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jermain-Defoe-c18359 in such fine form. However, the striker admits that Tottenham need to work harder at the back and not lose their focus.
The player said talked about the meeting the manager held with the defenders and said:
“There is no point in standing here telling you what was said in the meeting because I would be standing for a long time. But it is not just the defenders – it’s the whole team. It’s that famous saying: defend from the front. It is something that has happened
and it is something that we do.”
The player has paired up front alongside http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Emmanuel-Adebayor-c12526 in recent games after playing as a lone striker for much of the season due to the Togolese’s injury troubles.
Adebayor signed for Tottenham on a permanent deal this campaign after last season’s loan spell. The player may leave in January for the African Cup of Nations, but Defoe hopes for his stay. He added:
“Obviously for us we want him to stay here and help us to win games. At the end of the day, I can’t stand here and say he shouldn’t go because it is special when you play for your country. It is a decision Ade has to make for himself.”
