The striker scored a delightful hat-trick on Thursday night against Maribor as Tottenham grabbed their first win in the group stages of the competition. Defoe was in menacing form in front of goal, and displayed his frightening effectiveness as he rounded
of his hat-trick through some superb finishing.
The player’s hat-trick takes him above Teddy Sheringham in the club’s record books, and the player was proud of this achievement.
Tottenham now need only one victory to ensure their qualification for the next round of the tournament. The hat-trick was Defoe’s first for the club since February 2010, and has totalled his tally of goals to an impressive figure of 126.
The player spoke about his delight at having made history with the club, and surpassing Sheringham, a player he grew up idolising as a child. Speaking to reporters, Defoe said:
“That’s a special personal note as Teddy was a player I watched as a kid. He was a great player for club and country. It was amazing to score the hat-trick. As a forward you get judged on scoring goals. It’s the best thing in the world but it was important
we won the game tonight.”

Tottenham will travel to Manchester City this weekend full of confidence following the convincing victory over Maribor. With their impressive away form, the North London club are more than capable of pulling an upset against the reigning English champions.
