Degree help........?

I'hve read that , for those training to become pilots , it is preferable for them , while not necessary , to also do a degree.

My question is does it have to be a degree related to aviation?Like aeronautical engineering and such? or can it be anything else like say , psychology or english? What other degrees would you suggest?

Could any pilots out there tell me what it is they studied?Degree-wise i mean.I'd really appreciate that.

Also what if i did helicopter training as well? how would that work out? Instead of a degree i mean.

Thanks.

  1. I would suggest you get a degree in something useful, like a backup career if flying doesn't work out for you.  Like the other poster said, it only matters if you are going to be a test pilot or something.  Helicopter training would be fun, and expensive, but it doesn't substitute for a degree.  In fact, the pilots I know with thousands of hours in helicopters find that many airlines don't even count them as flight hours.  Only fixed wing time, for some airlines.  Good luck.

  2. Ok so you could get a degree in Underwater basketry for all they care. Get a degree in something to fall back on incase you lose an arm leg or eye. I am 16 and Im not sure which degree I am going to get. But defenetly get one.

  3. To be an airline pilot, there is no preferred degree.

To be a test pilot there might be a preference for a science or engineering degree, or at least suitable coursework in math, chemistry, and physics.

  4. airlines and most corporate jobs require a degree.. it doesnt matter what you get a degree in though.. it could be archeology for all they care.. but at the same time, they are going to hire the guy with an aviation related degree over someone with a different degree.. I studied Aviation Flight Science at Western Michigan University. Helicopter training is not a substitute for a degree.. I think the important thing that the airlines are looking for is that you are trainable and thirsty for knowledge, regardless of the field of study.. Also, a degree says that you can stick with something for more than a couple years. You're not gonna walk away from a job after a year or two after someone has invested time and money into training you..
